Inspired by Leo Babauta, I present this, my list of vows.
I vow to the world to do these things every day:
- To meditate for a minimum of 3 minutes.
- To be compassionate towards all living beings.
- To practice tolerance and patience in all facets of my life.
- To read at least 20 pages of something that will better me or increase my knowledge in some way (self-improvement).
I haven’t done so well on keeping these vows, at least the first one. So, I’ll have to up my game.
Also, I’ve added a fourth as of today: To do at least 15 minutes of self-improvement reading. This is reading some book or article on a topic that will improve me.
A little while back I made a (seemingly insignificant) change to the 4th vow. Previously it was to read 15 minutes a day. I have changed that to read 20 pages a day.
What I found was that I was “reading” for 15 minutes, but only getting through a handful of pages due to various distractions, etc. By putting a quantity goal on the number of pages I read in a day, I’ve increased the overall amount I’ve read.
